Preparing for a Colonoscopy: What to Expect from Your First GI Procedure
What Is a Colonoscopy?
A colonoscopy is a test that allows a gastroenterologist to view the inside of your large intestine (colon) using a thin, flexible camera. It helps detect colon cancer, polyps, bleeding, and inflammatory bowel disease.
When Is It Recommended?
- Blood in stools
- Chronic constipation or diarrhea
- Unexplained weight loss or anemia
- Screening for colon cancer (especially after age 45)
Step-by-Step: What to Expect
1. Preparation (The Day Before)
This is the most important part!
- You’ll be asked to follow a clear liquid diet.
- A bowel-cleansing solution is taken to empty your intestines.
Dr. Gaggar provides a personalized prep plan to ensure comfort and clarity.
2. Procedure Day
- It’s usually done under light sedation.
- Takes about 20–30 minutes.
- Most patients feel no pain and remember very little.
3. Post-Procedure
- You’ll rest briefly and can usually go home the same day.
- Some gas or bloating is normal.
Is It Safe?
Colonoscopy is a very safe, routine procedure in expert hands. Dr. Gaggar and his team ensure it’s smooth, sterile, and stress-free.
Early Detection Can Save Lives
Colon cancer is preventable if detected early through polyps removal. If you’re over 45, or have symptoms, don’t delay.
