Bloating and Excessive Gas: What Your Digestive System Is Trying to Tell You

Bloating is among the most common digestive complaints seen in gastroenterology clinics. While occasional bloating is normal, persistent symptoms should not be ignored.

Patients often describe feeling fullness, abdominal tightness, increased gas production, and discomfort after meals.

Several factors can contribute to bloating, including overeating, food intolerances, IBS, constipation, bacterial imbalance, and poor eating habits.

Many people unknowingly swallow excess air while eating too quickly, drinking carbonated beverages, or chewing gum frequently.

I advise patients to keep a food diary to identify potential trigger foods. Common offenders include dairy products, beans, carbonated drinks, artificial sweeteners, and certain vegetables.

Regular exercise, adequate hydration, and mindful eating habits can significantly reduce symptoms.

If bloating is accompanied by unexplained weight loss, blood in stools, severe pain, or persistent diarrhoea, further evaluation is necessary.

Your digestive system often provides early warning signs. Listening to those signals can help prevent more serious problems.
