Sometimes, this inflammation becomes very severe and needs urgent treatment \u2014 this is called Acute Severe Ulcerative Colitis (ASUC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is it safe to treat ASUC during pregnancy?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes. It is very important to treat ASUC during pregnancy \u2014 both for your health and for your baby\u2019s well-being. Uncontrolled inflammation is riskier than most treatments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Doctors will choose medications that are proven to be safe in pregnancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How is ASUC treated during pregnancy?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Corticosteroids (Steroids)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Given through the vein (IV) in the hospital, it help reduce the inflammation quickly.<br>Generally safe in pregnancy, especially after the first trimester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Supportive Care<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Fluids, pain relief, rest, and special attention to your nutrition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Blood tests and stool tests to monitor your condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Rescue Medications (if steroids don\u2019t work within 3\u20135 days):<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Infliximab (a type of biologic medicine)<br>-Safe in pregnancy.<br>-May slightly increase risk of infections in newborn, especially if used late in pregnancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cyclosporine (used in some cases)<br>-Used with caution and close monitoring.<br>-May be used short-term if infliximab is not an option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What if medications don\u2019t work?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your condition doesn\u2019t improve, surgery may be necessary. This is rare but can be lifesaving. Doctors may perform a procedure to remove the diseased part of your colon. It can be done safely during pregnancy if needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>How does it affect my baby?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Most treatments are safe for the baby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Active inflammation is more harmful than the medicines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your baby may be monitored more closely during your pregnancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Can I breastfeed after treatment?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes!
