Single-Balloon Enteroscopy (SBE)

Single-balloon enteroscopy is a specialised endoscopic procedure that allows doctors to examine the small intestine, a part of the digestive tract that cannot be completely visualised by routine upper gastrointestinal endoscopy or colonoscopy. It uses a long, flexible endoscope with an inflatable balloon attached to an overtube to help the endoscope advance deep into the small bowel. The procedure is usually performed under sedation or anaesthesia and may be carried out through the mouth or the anus, depending on the suspected location of the disease. Single-balloon enteroscopy is useful for investigating unexplained gastrointestinal bleeding, iron-deficiency anaemia, suspected small-bowel Crohn’s disease, intestinal strictures, polyps, tumours and other small-intestinal disorders.

An important advantage of this technique is that it allows doctors not only to identify abnormalities but also to perform therapeutic procedures during the same session. These include taking tissue biopsies, treating bleeding lesions, removing selected polyps, retrieving retained foreign bodies and dilating suitable benign strictures. The procedure may also help in evaluating abnormalities detected on capsule endoscopy or CT/MR enterography.

Single-balloon enteroscopy is an important tool in modern gastroenterology because it provides direct visualisation, tissue diagnosis and, in selected cases, definitive treatment of small-bowel diseases without the need for surgery.
